The tech tree

Technologies ("Techs") are empire upgrades that cost Science and provide various benefits. Each Technology unlocks additional Technologies when researched.

All available Techs are placed in a draw pile and shuffled. Whenever a Tech is completed, Four Techs (five, with The Oracle, and three, at the beginning of the game) will be drawn from this shuffled deck and presented to the player to choose from. One can be selected to research, at which point the Nation's Science output will be dedicated to paying the Tech's cost until it is fully researched. Techs not chosen will be put in a discard pile which is shuffled once the deck is empty to form a new deck. #Bonus Cards not chosen will be permanently removed from the game. Scholar Leaders can redraw Techs once each turn, discarding all currently offered Techs (permanently, for Bonus Cards) to draw a new hand.

After a tech is completed, any newly available techs are added to the discard pile and a new set of techs will be drawn from the draw pile for the player to choose from.

Bonus Cards[edit]

Some Technologies unlock Bonus Cards, which are added to the discard pile just like the regular Techs unlocked by researching that Tech. When researched, these Bonus Cards give a one-time bonus, such as 200 , and do not unlock further Techs. If Bonus Cards are not researched the first time they are offered, they are trashed, or permanently removed from the game. Because of this, it is sometimes useful to time Technology research so that Bonus Cards are unlocked when they will be useful, rather than allowing them to be trashed because they appeared when not needed.
