Wood is a tradable resource required for several advanced units, upkeep of those units, and most immediately for tile improvements.

Workers can spend orders to harvest wood from forest and scrub tiles (which will slowly regrow unless cleared), and eventually the technology of forestry allows lumber mill improvements for an ongoing income.
