Below is a table that lists all the titles that can be acquired, as well as how much legitimacy it provides to the ruler (and their heirs). A new title can only be gained if that title provides more legitimacy than the previous title.  
* Finishing Ambitions (+10 Legitimacy), or Legacies within 20 turns (+5 Legitimacy). These never decay.
* Events (can go up and down by a few points). These never decay.
* Cognomen of past rulers (these decay with each new ruler: it starts at 50% and decays to 33%, 25%, 20%, 16.6%, 13.3%, 11.6% and 10%)
