Legitimacy is a system of titles earned by leaders through their actions. Each point of Legitimacy earns +0.1 orders Orders/Turn and +1 to all Family Opinions.

Legitimacy can be earned in the following ways:
* Finishing Ambitions (+10 Legitimacy)

Known cognomen
* Earning enough renown to achieve a new cognomen (see below). Valid only while the leader is alive.
Below is a table that lists all the cognomen that can be acquired, as well as how much legitimacy it provides to the ruler (and their heirs). A new cognomen can only be gained if that title provides more legitimacy than the previous title.
* Finishing Ambitions (+10 Legitimacy), or Legacies within 20 turns (+5 Legitimacy). These never decay.
* Events (can go up and down by a few points). These never decay.
* Discovering landmarks (+2 Legitimacy if undiscovered by other nations, +1 otherwise). This is counted as "Events" in-game.
* Cognomens of past rulers (these decay with each new ruler: it starts at 50% for the previous ruler and decays to 33%, 25%, 20%, 16.6%, 13.3%, 11.6% and 10% for each ruler before that)

Legitimacy can be lost or spent in the following ways:
* Schemer Leaders can spend 2 Legitimacy to buy 10 orders.
* Each failed Legacy and abandoned Ambition subtracts 5 Legitimacy.
Cognomens
Below is a table that lists all the cognomens that can be acquired, as well as how much legitimacy it provides to the ruler (and partly to their heirs). Each cognomen is granted once enough renown points are earned; points can be earned towards a given cognomen by completing actions specific to that cognomen. A new cognomen can only be gained if that title provides more legitimacy than the previous title, with the exception of the negative cognomens.
The renown threshold for unlocking cognomens increases by 5% for each subsequent Leader, making them more expensive as the game progresses.

Legitimacy is a system of titles earned by leaders through their actions. Each point of Legitimacy earns +0.1 Orders/Turn and +1 to all Family Opinions.

Legitimacy can be earned in the following ways:

 • Earning enough renown to achieve a new cognomen (see below). Valid only while the leader is alive.
 • Finishing Ambitions (+10 Legitimacy), or Legacies within 20 turns (+5 Legitimacy). These never decay.
 • Events (can go up and down by a few points). These never decay.
 • Discovering landmarks (+2 Legitimacy if undiscovered by other nations, +1 otherwise). This is counted as "Events" in-game.
 • Cognomens of past rulers (these decay with each new ruler: it starts at 50% for the previous ruler and decays to 33%, 25%, 20%, 16.6%, 13.3%, 11.6% and 10% for each ruler before that)

Legitimacy can be lost or spent in the following ways:

 • Schemer Leaders can spend 2 Legitimacy to buy 10 .
 • Each failed Legacy and abandoned Ambition subtracts 5 Legitimacy.

Cognomens[edit]

Below is a table that lists all the cognomens that can be acquired, as well as how much legitimacy it provides to the ruler (and partly to their heirs). Each cognomen is granted once enough renown points are earned; points can be earned towards a given cognomen by completing actions specific to that cognomen. A new cognomen can only be gained if that title provides more legitimacy than the previous title, with the exception of the negative cognomens.

The renown threshold for unlocking cognomens increases by 5% for each subsequent Leader, making them more expensive as the game progresses.
